Danville Area Community is sponsoring a photo excursion to Southern Illinois with Les Woodrum as you guide.

The trip is scheduled for October 21-23, 2014.

Come explore scenic Southern Illinois during the peak of the fall foliage color season with photographer Les Woodrum. The trip will include nightly classes and critiques of that day’s photo shoots.

Transportation, lodging and instruction fees are included in the price of the class. Cost of meals are extra. This photo opportunity is only $300.00 per participant.

Les Woodrum has photographed Southern Illinois since 1976. Early in his career, he was the scientific research photographer for The Illinois Natural History Survey, at which, part of his job was to document in photographs the natural beauty of all scenic areas of Illinois. Les spent many months in Southern Illinois photographing the many wonders. The tour will lead you to both the popular spots that people love to photograph, plus many lessor-known sights that only the “locals” know about.

Adobe Lightroom

New Class offered at DACC

Les Woodrum recently completed Adobe certified training in Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 4 software and will offer a class at DACC this fall. Lightroom provides a comprehensive set of digital photography tools, from powerfully simple one-click adjustments to cutting-edge advanced controls. Create images that inspire, inform, and delight. Lightroom is becoming the photographer’s choice program in sorting and cataloging their photo collections. Besides cataloging and editing your photos, there are many retouching and photo manipulations that can be performed with this rather inexpensive program.

The class will teach how to view and organize, fix, and enhance photos, and produce photo creations and composites.
Class Schedule - Thursday nights - 6-8:00pm,

Goodbye to a Good Friend

In March, photographers across the country lost a good friend. On March 13th, Calumet Photo closed its doors with no warning to customers or employees. All of their U.S. stores were locked up as the camera store filed for bankruptcy.

I first became acquainted with Calumet in 1977 when I was attending college at Southern Illinois University. Calumet 4x5 view cameras was the standard tool we had to use in most of the photo classes.

In later years, I came to depend on Calumet to supply most of the chemicals and paper I use for black and white, color processing, and most recently, digital printing.

I really used the services of Calumet when I was a Quality Control Manager of a major photo lab in Chicago. If I had a problem, I could call Calumet and a service rep would be at the photo lab within minutes to help.

In the past few years, Calumet has been my sole supplier for black and white chemicals, paper and film. With my daughter living in Chicago, Calumet was a great place for me to “hang out” on a Saturday morning. I would always see an old friend there from my earlier days of working in the Chicago photo community.

The one thing I appreciated most at Calumet is that their staffers were all photographers first. They knew their stuff, both in the traditional film world and in digital. I feel sorry for the 200+ people who were locked out.

The death of Calumet has put a definite hole in the ability to get equipment and supplies in this area. There is no other big camera store in the Chicago area. I have found other suppliers, but now I have to plan ahead more to make up for the past ability to get needed supplied here the next day.

For friends and former students still printing traditional black and white, if you are in need of chemicals, let me know. With the difficulty of purchasing supplies now, I have been stocking up.

Goodbye Calumet – you will be missed!

Upcoming Exhibits

Les will again be exhibiting photos at the annual Arts in the Park show held in Danville, Lincoln Park. The date is June 21-22.

There are two locations currently in Danville that you can also view photos by Les Woodrum. The recently opened Mad Goat Coffee Shop has three photos on display. The Mad Goat Coffee Shop is located at 2601 N. Vermilion. It is just north of the Custard Cup.

Also, the DACC Village Mall office has over 30 photos hanging on its walls. The DACC Mall office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Barn and Clouds on Stony Creek Road – © 2013

I would venture to say that this barn is one of the most photographed barns in Vermilion County. It is located on Stony Creek Road in the Grape Creek area. I have photographed it al least 10 times myself, and many of my students have found it too. I really liked the sky and clouds in this attempt.

Camera – Bronica SQ-a with 50mm lens
Film – Kodak T-Max 100
Exposure – f/16 at 1/15 sec. shot with #25 red filter
